Eastern Health provides training opportunities in Orthopaedics at Box Hill and Maroondah Hospital campuses.
Eastern Health provides Orthopaedic services to a wide metropolitan and regional area in Victoria. As such, there is an extensive volume and breadth of Orthopaedic surgery delivered by our Units. These include: Upper Limb and Lower Limb Arthroplasty, Sports and Soft Tissue procedures, Foot and Ankle surgery, and some Paediatrics surgery. There are daily Trauma Lists for the high numbers of adult and paediatric trauma that attend our Emergency Departments and clinics. Our units are supported by dedicated Perioperative Orthopaedic/Orthopaedic Geriatric teams who manage the elderly and medically co-morbid patients. This group forms a large proportion of the population.
In addition to serving the two Emergency Departments at Box Hill and Maroondah Hospitals, the Emergency Department at the Angliss Hospital is also provided with orthopaedic cover. Weekly satellite clinics are hosted at the Angliss Campus.
There are three accredited Australian Orthopaedic Association (AOA) trainees at Box Hill Hospital, and two trainees at Maroondah Hospital. These positions are only available by applications through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and AOA training program.
There are four Unaccredited Registrar positions at Box Hill Hospital and three positions at Maroondah Hospital. Additionally, each hospital’s Orthopaedic Unit has a senior resident position.
Registrar duties include:
- Regular theatre, outpatient clinic and fracture clinic attendance
- Participation in the on call roster
- Daily ward rounds of inpatients and referrals from other units
- Timely review of Emergency referrals
- Medical Student Teaching
- Contributions to each unit’s education and research activities (Journal Club, Research Meetings) and regular quality assurance reviews (XR meetings, Presentations and Audits)
Accredited trainees attend compulsory AOA Bone School teaching sessions on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. They are supported by Unaccredited Registrars during these times.
