Anaesthesia Trainees at Eastern Health can be assured of a broad range of clinical experience, high quality clinical supervision and a supportive environment for learning.

Eastern Health is affiliated with the 𠆎astern Rotation’ of the ‘Victorian Anaesthesia Training Scheme’ (VATS). Further information regarding applications to the VATS should be sought from ANZCA.

Training opportunities in Anaesthesia are provided at 5 separate campuses, all of which are accredited for specialist training in anaesthesia by the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA).

 

Box Hill Hospital is accredited for 2 years of specialist Anaesthesia training. Positions available in 2024 include:

  • 4 Provisional Fellows (pre-approved by ANZCA, appointed by Box Hill for 6 month rotations)
  • 3 Advanced Trainee positions (allocated through the Eastern Rotation of VATS)
  • 4 Independent Registrar positions (appointed by Box Hill, suitable for SIMGs and independent trainees)
  • 5 Introductory/Basic Trainees (allocated through the Eastern Rotation of VATS)
  • 2 ICU/Anaesthetic Registrar (not affiliated with VATS, appointed by Box Hill)
  • 2 ED Registrars (on rotation from Box Hill ED)
  • 3 Critical Care HMOs
  • 1 Pain Registrar (appointed by Box Hill, comprises 50% pain and 50% anaesthesia)

Maroondah Hospital is accredited for 1 year of specialist Anaesthesia training. Positions available in 2024 include:

  • 2 Introductory/Basic Trainees (allocated through the Eastern Rotation of VATS)
  • 1 Independent Registrar position (appointed by Maroondah)
  • 1 ICU/Anaesthetic Registrar (appointed by Maroondah)
  • 1 ED Registrar (on rotation from Maroondah ED)
  • 2 Critical Care HMOs

Angliss Hospital is accredited for 1 year of specialist Anaesthesia training.

  • HMO and Registrar rosters at Box Hill include rotating to Angliss for both in-hours and out-of-hours work.
  • Clinical experience includes Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatric surgery, ENT and General Surgery.

Blackburn Public Surgical Centre is accredited as an additional campus of Box Hill Hospital.

  • Low acuity elective surgery providing good clinical experience for junior trainees

Yarra Ranges Health is accredited as an additional campus of Box Hill Hospital.

  • Good opportunity for Anaesthesia Trainees to obtain clinical experience in ophthalmic anaesthesia.

 

Notable features of Anaesthesia Training at Eastern Health include:

  • High acuity surgical services at Box Hill, particularly in Vascular, Upper GI, Colorectal, Thoracic and ENT.
  • Busy Orthopaedic and Plastics units at Maroondah, with good opportunities for regional anaesthesia.
  • Busy Obstetric units at both Box Hill and Angliss Hospitals (5,000 deliveries per year across Eastern Health).
  • Regular Paediatric surgery at Box Hill Hospital (predominantly General, ENT, Plastics and Orthopaedics).
  • A strong commitment to teaching, with a weekly structured tutorial program in protected teaching time.
  • Active assistance with both Primary and Final Examination preparation.
