Eastern Health (EH) has a reputation for providing excellent opportunities for General Practice (GP) training, in a friendly and supportive environment. From internship onwards, we support HMOs who are considering General Practice as a possible career option, and those who have already joined a GP Training Program.

  • A broad range of experience suitable to general practice
    • o EH can provide the hospital based requirements for GP training, including rotations in general medicine, general surgery, emergency medicine and paediatrics, as well as other areas relevant to general practice.
    • o EH offers numerous paediatric positions, and we aim to provide all HMOs requiring a paediatric rotation the opportunity to do so during their PGY2 or PGY3 year. In addition, our Emergency Departments (at Box Hill, Maroondah & Angliss Hospitals) can be approved for the paediatric requirement for GP training.
  • Extended skills posts
    • o For those already undertaking General Practice training, we offer accredited Extended Skills positions for your training.

  • Education
    • o GP training Information sessions are held at each of our hospitals, well before applications for General Practice training open. These sessions provide advice about training, how to apply and an opportunity to have your questions about General Practice training answered by experts.
  • Facilitation
    • o The Medical Workforce Unit will work with you to try to assist you to obtain your preferred rotations for a career in General Practice

  • Dr Penny Gaskell (Eastern Health GP Liaison Medical Officer) offers information and advice regarding planning for your career in General Practice
  • Interview practice is also available for applicants to assist preparation for selection interviews
