Patients will be triaged according to their presenting problem and where possible, offered an appointment in a clinic location closest to their home address (subject to appointment availability and waiting times).
Referral to Eastern Health Neurology Clinics is not appropriate for:
- Children below 15 years of age (refer to Paediatric Medicine).
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (refer directly to Plastic Surgery following nerve conduction studies).
- Chronic pain management (including low back pain and spinal pain).
- Management of typical Bell’s palsy (management information is available in HealthPathways Melbourne).
Information is available on HealthPathways Melbourne for assistance in managing your patient’s condition. This includes what investigations you need to perform prior to referring to a specialist and what information you need to include in the referral. For conditions listed below, refer to the Statewide Referral Criteria for Specialist Clinics:
- Headache
- Motor weakness or paraesthesia
- Movement disorders and dystonia
- Stroke or transient ischaemic attack
- Vertigo (neurology)
For Epilepsy and Seizures, refer to First Seizure and Epilepsy clinics for referral criteria.
For all other Neurology conditions, please continue to refer as per clinical assessment and need.
Eastern Health’s Neurosurgery service has limited capacity to accept new referrals. Referrals will only be accepted for patients with intracranial conditions or CNS tumours only. This does not include degenerative spinal conditions, for which alternative referral options are recommended. More information is available on HealthPathways Melbourne

If your patient’s condition deteriorates, please send an updated referral via HealthLink SmartForms selecting the Referral Continuation “Amended referral/update previously sent referral” with additional clinical information.
Emergency cases should be sent to the Emergency Department.
