Eastern Health Box Hill runs a clinic for the assessment, investigation and treatment of general infectious disease conditions.
Information is available on HealthPathways Melbourne for assistance in managing your patient’s condition. This includes what investigations you need to perform prior to referring to a specialist and what information you need to include in the referral. At Eastern Health, we accept referrals for the following Infectious Disease conditions as per clinical assessment and need:
- HIV
- Mycobacterial infections including tuberculosis
- Travel-related and tropical infections
- Complex or chronic bacterial infections
- Management of latent infections in immunocompromised individuals
- Follow up of occupational and non-occupational exposures
Referrals are triaged depending on priority. For urgent concerns we encourage clinicians to contact the on-call ID registrar or physician through the hospital switchboard via 1300 342 255. Acutely unwell patients can also be directed to the Emergency Department at any time.
For referrals regarding:
- Suspected or Confirmed tuberculosis, please use the following pathway: TB referral pathway (PDF, 226KB)
- Viral hepatitis, please refer to the Eastern Health Gastroenterology Department Clinic
- Chronic lower limb ulcers, diabetic feet and foot osteomyelitis, consider referral to the Eastern Health Vascular Surgery clinic.

If your patient’s condition deteriorates, please send an updated referral via HealthLink SmartForms selecting the Referral Continuation “Amended referral/update previously sent referral” with additional clinical information.
Emergency cases should be sent to the Emergency Department.
