The Eastern Dual Diagnosis Service works with Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) services and youth homelessness agencies to improve support for people who experience mental ill health and substance use concerns.
Our team includes a Service Manager, a Psychiatrist, Mental Health Nurses, a Social Worker, Clinical Psychologist, Occupational Therapist and a Lived-Experience Carer and an office Administration staff member.
The Eastern Dual Diagnosis Service provides assessment and treatment advice, including shared care, to better support people and their families/carers living with mental ill health and alcohol or drug concerns.
We also provide education and training on mental health and substance use concerns and support services in the development of resources to address these concerns.
We also work with a variety of partner agencies to improve services and promote a greater understanding and knowledge of dual diagnosis.
We are unable to take referrals from members of the general public however in the case of mental health emergency or for advice, please call the Eastern Health 24/7 triage line on 1300 721 927. For other emergencies please call 000.

Shared-care starts with a referral from a clinical community mental health and rehabilitation service to the Dual Diagnosis team.
This enables the Dual Diagnosis Team to work side by side with consumers and their treating team to deliver integrated mental health and substance use care.
We also give indirect support to consumers, their families and carers by making recommendations about dual diagnosis treatment to the consumer’s treatment team.
Shared care is about the team you bring together to support a dual diagnosis recovery.
Supports youth Homelessness workers to identify and respond with early intervention to the complex needs of young people experiencing homelessness.
The initiative fosters ongoing partnerships between mental health, drug and alcohol and youth homelessness services in the eastern region.
The Eastern Dual Diagnosis Service works in a partnership with the Dual Diagnosis Consumer and Carer Advisory Council and other partner agencies. This is called the ‘In-Tandem’ Model.
The Council is made up of ten consumers and carers with a lived experience of dual diagnosis, who provide a valued voice about service improvements, broader system design, are involved in staff recruitment, and in the development and delivery of training and educational activities.
Their lived-experience contribution is crucial in the way dual diagnosis treatment and support is offered at Eastern Health, across the eastern metropolitan region and contributes to the broader state wide dual diagnosis direction. The Council meets on a monthly basis.
Council members with a lived experience of dual diagnosis also lead weekly group based discussions for consumers in both mental health admission and community based clinics and at the inpatient medical detoxification ward at Eastern Health Box Hill.
