Dual Diagnosis

The Eastern Dual Diagnosis Service is one of four specialist dual diagnosis teams funded by the Department of Health as an initiative which aims to support the improvement of responses of mental health and drug treatment services to individuals with both mental illness and substance use problems (dual diagnosis).

Our multidisciplinary team offers a range of specialist expertise and works collaboratively with other services.

The aim of the service is to focus on two important aspects:

  • Developing the capability of hospital and community based alcohol and drug, and mental health treatment and support services to improve health outcomes of individuals with a dual diagnosis
  • Ensure that the inter-service arrangements (including the service's North Eastern Hume rural component) that are developed reflect the initiatives purpose in addressing the gaps and needs in dual diagnosis and service delivery

The Eastern Dual Diagnosis Service provides the following services:

  • Consultation: primary, secondary and tertiary consultation to staff within eastern mental health (clinical and MHCSS) and alcohol and other drug services who provide support and treatment to individuals with a dual diagnosis (adult and youth)
  • Education and Training: on dual diagnosis issues to staff working within eastern mental health and alcohol and other drug services (adult and youth)

Who has access to the Eastern Dual Diagnosis Service?

The Eastern Dual Diagnosis Service provides services to all staff working within the Eastern Metropolitan Region mental health and alcohol and other drug services (adult and youth). Services are also provided to the Mental Health Community Support Services (MHCSS) in the adult sector only.

The Eastern Dual Diagnosis Service does not provide direct service to individuals with a dual diagnosis and/or their families. Services are only available to organisations providing support and treatment to those with a dual diagnosis.

Requests for consultation can be made by phone from any professional working within eastern metropolitan region mental health and alcohol and other drug services (adult and youth). If EDDS clinicians are not available immediately, a message can be left regarding the request.
