Intensive Care Services - Services

Eastern Health Intensive Care Services currently comprise three Intensive Care Units (ICU), at the Box Hill Hospital in Box Hill, Maroondah Hospital in Ringwood East and Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully.

Each ICU provides high level care to patients within a multidisciplinary teaching hospital environment. Much of this care includes support for patients with severe illnesses, complex surgical recovery, and need for complex procedures, artificial ventilation and other forms of life support.

The Box Hill Hospital Intensive Care Unit is located on Level 2 of the new hospital building (building A). This unit has 20 physical ICU bed spaces and is accredited for training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine.

The Maroondah Hospital Intensive Care Unit is located on Level 3 in a purpose-built renovation of the hospital building. This unit has 16 physical bed spaces and is accredited for training by the College of Intensive Care Medicine.

The Angliss Hospital Intensive Care Unit is located on Level 4 in a purpose-built addition to the hospital building. This unit has 14 physical bed spaces.

Information for Visitors

Our doors are open 24 hours a day to family and friends. Frequent visits are often very helpful for our patients. We urge visitors to look after their own rest. In most circumstances visitors will be limited to 2 persons at a time. This is to facilitate ongoing patient care and rapid access to the patient in cases of emergency. Some restrictions to visitation may apply, please speak to the bedside nurse. Patients in intensive care receive care according to their needs 24 hours a day.

Consultants lead a formal multidisciplinary ward round twice daily. This is usually between 9–11am and 4–6pm. Visitors may be asked to take an active role in the ward round, or invited to a seperate meeting where ideas can be shared. We find that frequent face-to-face conversations between the healthcare team and the patient and their families are very valuable.

For your protection as well as the staff and patients, we ask that staff and visitors to ICU observe the following precautions against transmission:

  • The antibacterial hand foam is designed to protect patients, staff and visitors. Please use prior to entering and exiting the ICU and if the bedside nurse prompts you to do so
  • Before entering a patient’s room please see the bedside nurse to ensure further infection control measures are not required
  • Please inform ICU staff if you or any family member has experienced recent symptoms of a cold, influenza or gastroenteritis
