Intensive Care Services - Services

Eastern Health Intensive Care Services currently comprise two Intensive Care Units (ICU), at the Box Hill Hospital in Box Hill, and Maroondah Hospital in Ringwood East. A third ICU at the Angliss Hospital in Upper Ferntree Gully is nearing completion.

Each ICU provides high level care to patients within a multidisciplinary teaching hospital environment. Much of this care includes support for patients with severe illnesses, complex surgical recovery, and need for complex procedures, artificial ventilation and other forms of life support.

The Box Hill Hospital Intensive Care Unit is located on Level 2 of the new hospital building (building A). This unit has 20 physical ICU bed spaces.

The Maroondah Hospital Intensive Care Unit is located on Level 3 in a purpose-built renovation of the hospital building. This unit has 16 physical bed spaces.

Both ICUs are led by Intensive Care Consultant Intensivists, and staffed by Critical-Care trained Nursing staff, Allied Health staff and training Medical staff.

Other nursing roles include Associate Nurse Unit Managers, Clinical Support nurses, Liaison nurses, Equipment nurses and Critical Care Registered nurses.  

Allied Health and support staff are an essential part of the ICU team and include:

  • Dieticians
  • Social Workers
  • Pastoral Care Workers
  • Pharmacists
  • Clerks
  • Patient Services Assistants and Cleaners
  • A Clinical Data Analyst

These staff lead a clinical service to patients within the ICU and an outreach service to the rest of the hospital including

  • the Medical Emergency Team (MET)
  • inpatient and Emergency Department referrals
  • patients requiring Total Parenteral Nutrition and Tracheostomies

Information for Visitors

Visiting of patients is permitted 24 hours a day, only 2 persons at any time unless extraordinary circumstances. Some restrictions to visitation may apply, please speak to the bedside nurse. Consultants lead formal multidisciplinary rounds usually between 9-11am and 4-6pm daily, but patients are managed actively according to their needs 24 hours a day. To protect the privacy and confidentiality of all patients, visitors may be asked to leave the unit during this time.

Flowers or cameras are not permitted in the ICUs at any time. Mobile phones must be turned off while inside the ICU but may be used in the waiting room.

For your protection as well as the staff and patients, we ask that staff and visitors to ICU observe the following precautions against transmission:

  • The antibacterial hand foam is designed to protect patients, staff and visitors. Please use prior to entering and exiting the ICU and if the bedside nurse prompts you to do so
  • Before entering a patient’s room please see the bedside nurse to ensure further infection control measures are not required
  • Please inform ICU staff if you or any family member has experienced recent symptoms of a cold, influenza or gastroenteritis
