Breath test information

The gastroenterology department provides specialist medical care to patients with disorders of the gastrointestinal tract including the liver and pancreas.

Our areas of expertise include: viral hepatitis; hepatocellular carcinoma; inflammatory bowel disease; coeliac disease; eosinophilic oesophagitis; and functional bowel disease (IBS).

We also providediagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic services including gastroscopy, colonoscopy, ERCP and capsule endoscopy. Fibroscan assessment of liver fibrosis is also available. Breath tests for Fructose and lactose malabsorption, and small bowel overgrowth, and tests for calprotectin and thiopurine metabolites are provided by our laboratory (click here to find out more about our laboratory).

Please note: on all referrals we require:

  • Patient’s Full Name
  • Home and mobile phone number
  • Address
  • Date of birth
  • Medicare number
  • Your provider number (required for billing via medicare)
  • Valid for 12 months or indefinite.
  • Any relevant results on front page: eg Ferritin if iron deficient, LFTs in liver disease,

They will then be triaged to the most appropriate clinic that is closest to the patient’s home address.  The patient will not be necessarily seen by the doctor to whom you address the referral.

The Department of Gastroenterology offers limited open access endoscopy for patients who have a strong indication for an endoscopic procedure, and who are fit and well. Further information and a referral form can be obtained by opening the ‘RAGE’ (Rapid Access to Gastrointestinal Endoscopy) here.

Patients not eligible for open access endoscopy based on the criteria outlined in the ‘RAGE’ form will need to be reviewed in a Gastroenterology outpatient clinic prior to any procedures being scheduled. The general outpatient referral form should be used for such patients.

Frequently asked questions

If the patient has a low ferritin it probably best to refer to gastroenterology first, if the ferritin is high a referral to haematology is appropriate.

Hepatitis B surface antigen, Hepatitis C antibody, ANA, SMA, AMA, ferritin, ceruloplasmin, fasting glucose, lipids, and a liver ultrasound.

This depends on whether their affected relative(s) were first or second degree relatives, and also their age at diagnosis. A comprehensive table from the current Australian guidelines can be found at http://www.cancer.org.au/health-professionals/clinical-guidelines/colorectal-cancer.html

Tissue transglutaminase (tTG) serology can be helpful if the patient is consuming gluten containing foods, but may cause a “false negative” if on a gluten free diet. The gene test: HLA DQ2 & DQ8 will help exclude patients as coeliac disease only occurs if DQ2 or DQ8 are present, but it is not diagnostic of the disease.

Liver function tests, liver ultrasound, viral load. Hepatitis B patients should have hepatitis BeAg and eAb serology. Please see GESA website for more detail.
