The Eastern Health Integrated Renal Service (EHIRS) was established in 2008 to service the growing health needs of people living in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
The service provides a comprehensive care for people with kidney disease, including:

  • Management of acute kidney disease in hospital, including dialysis and plasma exchange when required
  • Outpatient management of acute and chronic kidney diseases
  • Preparation for dialysis for those who require it, including provision of information and education
  • Surgery and radiological procedures to enable people to have dialysis (“dialysis access”)
  • Provision of chronic dialysis, including haemodialysis at home, haemodialysis in a Satellite Unit, and peritoneal dialysis
  • Assessment and preparation for kidney transplant
  • Care of kidney transplant recipients after discharge from hospital (the surgery is performed at another hospital)
  • Allied Health services including dietetics, social work and psychologist support
  • Research into kidney disease and its complications

We encourage and support dialysis at home where appropriate and have strong links with community care providers to help manage those patients for whom dialysis is not appropriate.

In addition, we provide both inpatient and outpatient Obstetric Medicine services to pregnant women with pre-existing or new medical conditions receiving Obstetric care at Eastern Health. This is a collaborative service involving Physicians, Obstetricians and Midwives in a multidisciplinary model of care that includes consultation with other medical subspecialties where required.
