Spectrum

Spectrum is a statewide service that supports and works with local Area Mental Health Services to provide treatment for people with personality disorder. Spectrum focuses on those who are at risk from serious self-harm or suicide and who have particularly complex needs. Spectrum is committed to research that contributes to the worldwide evidence base for excellence in treatment of personality disorder, with a particular focus on Borderline Personality Disorder. Spectrum routinely engages in service-focused evaluations, promoting best-practice and optimising client services. Spectrum also has an extensive collaborative network with Melbourne hospitals and universities, supporting research degree student research and broader health-sector initiatives.

Spectrum has a dedicated research group as well as research-active clinical staff and conducts a range of projects. Examples of current research activities include:

  • Facilitating and conducting research evaluations of Spectrum's clinical services
  • Co-supervising higher-degree research students from a range of Melbourne-based universities
  • Promoting research amongst the Eastern Health community through collaborative initiatives and featured research articles
  • Providing research education opportunities to registrars and visiting clinicians
  • Encouraging and supporting Spectrum Staff to disseminate results of research activities through conference presentations and publications
