Your Pathology Visit – What to Bring and What to Know
Getting Ready for Your Visit
Preparing for your pathology visit helps us provide the best care and ensures your appointment goes smoothly. Below is a quick guide on what to bring, how to prepare, and answers to common questions.
- Your Doctor’s Referral (Pathology Request Form)
This tells us which tests have been requested. We can’t perform tests without it. If your referral was sent electronically, please check it was directed to Eastern Health Pathology.
- Medicare Card and Identification
Required for billing and to verify your identity. If you have a DVA card or private health insurance, please bring those too.
- Photo ID (e.g., Driver’s Licence or Passport)
May be needed for some tests, particularly for confirmation of patient identity in line with safety protocols.
- Any relevant medical history or medication list (if advised by your doctor)
Some test results are influenced by medications or existing conditions, so it helps if we have context when needed.
Fasting Requirements
Your doctor will let you know if you need to fast. Common fasting tests include cholesterol, glucose, and GTT.
- No food or drink (except water) for 8–10 hours
- Take medications only if your doctor advises
- Avoid chewing gum or drinking anything other than plain water
Hydration
Drinking water helps make your veins easier to access. Unless you’ve been asked to fast completely, stay hydrated before your test.
Medications
Unless told otherwise by your doctor, take your medications as usual.
Clothing
Wear loose or short sleeves if possible. This makes it easier to access your arm for blood collection.
For children – bring toy
Most of our collection centres experience peak times in the morning where waiting times of up to one hour may occur.
You may notice other patients being seen ahead of you. Some patients have urgent or time-sensitive tests, so patients are not always seen in order of arrival.
If you are not fasting or do not wish to wait, you may prefer to attend later in the day.
