Eastern Health acknowledges with respect the Traditional Owners of the lands on which our health services reside, the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation. Wurundjeri Week (3-9 August) provides a meaningful time for reflection, learning and recognition of the enduring connection the Wurundjeri People have to Culture, Community and Country.
The Wurundjeri People take their name from the Woi wurrung words wurun, meaning the manna gum tree that grows along Birrarung (Yarra River), and djeri, referring to the grub found in or near the tree.
Eastern Health values and respects our ongoing relationship with the Wurundjeri Woi wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation and remains committed to strengthening partnerships that support Aboriginal self-determination, cultural safety and reconciliation. These relationships continue to guide our learning and help us create more culturally responsive healthcare services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Throughout Wurundjeri Week, we encourage our staff and community to take time to learn about Wurundjeri history, culture and contemporary achievements, and to reflect on our role in supporting truth-telling, respect and meaningful reconciliation.
You can learn more about the history, culture and stories of the Wurundjeri People through the Wurundjeri Woi wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation website and explore the stories of Wurundjeri Ancestors who have shaped the history of this region.
