We’re here to help.

While many are enjoying the holiday season with loved ones, health care workers are right where they’re needed most. Their dedication, skill, and compassion are the true gifts of the season.

Sally, an ICU Associate Nurse Unit Manager, reflects on how different the holiday period can be in hospital for staff and patient alike.

“I think patients and their families are quite kind to us over this season, and everyone’s just trying to make the best of a bad situation.”

The ICU can have patients in their care for days, weeks, or even months at a time. This poses different challenges, but also opportunities for individualised care.

“What I love about ICU nursing is that we are very calm, controlled, and organized in this environment, and we can be really thorough.

So, we have capacity to not only think about the physical needs of the patients, but the emotional and psychosocial aspects of care as well. We can be quite holistic and systematic in our approach.”

With nine years of experience, Sally has seen a lot of patients over that time.

“We have had some special patients in here, ones that have been in here for a really long period of time. You definitely develop a connection with them and with their families, and that’s really lovely to see the progression of them being really unwell to getting better and going home. Those moments really stick out.”

Stay safe and be kind to those that care for you during this festive season.
