“Initially Peter’s speech could only be understood about half the time, whereas now we can understand him one hundred percent of the time, which is really lovely.”

This year’s Speech Pathology Week theme is Impact Through Communication. It highlights the important work that speech pathologists do in supporting communication.

In 2024, Peter, a consumer at Eastern Health, was diagnosed with necrotizing myopathy, a rare autoimmune disease, and rhabdomyolysis. However, the cause remains unknown.

“I had an episode where I suffered muscle breakdown, and it caused my body to be quite affected, particularly my jaw and speech.”  Peter said.

The acute speech pathology team at Eastern Health Box Hill conducted a Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) assessment which involves a camera that inserted into the airway through the nose. And a video fluoroscopy, also known as a swallowing x-ray. The assessments provide information on his swallowing function, saliva management and vocal folds function; an essential part in deciding the next steps of Peter’s care.

The team at Eastern Health also provided Peter with physical therapy to practice both swallowing and communication.

Once Peter was able to engage in intensive, active rehabilitation, he was transferred to Eastern Health Peter James Centre to continue his sub-acute care.

Stephanie Williams, a speech pathologist at Peter James Centre has been involved in Peter’s care which includes conducting repeat swallowing X-rays, creating rehabilitation plans, swallow therapy and exercises, and therapeutical oral trials to target his swallowing strength and coordination.

“It’s been really rewarding working closely with Peter and his family to promote his recovery. As well as working together in a multidisciplinary team to really provide a patient centred, coordinated care.”

“Peter is so impressive. He’s just been so motivated, so dedicated, despite his long journey in hospital. Seeing the improvements over time has been really lovely.” Stephanie said.

Thank you to our amazing speech pathologists who have made a positive impact on the lives of those in our community.

And special thanks to Peter, for sharing his story with us.
