“With understanding, respect and inclusion, we can all make a difference.” – Geriatrician Prof. Peteris Darzins
The Dementia Action Week event, held in the Eastern Health Box Hill Atrium, included keynote speakers, information booths, and resources for staff and the community.
Among the attendees were Consumer Representatives, Geriatrician Prof. Peteris Darzins, Executive Director Adj. Prof. Philippa Blencowe, Eastern Health CEO Prof. Helen Cooper, and Mayor of Whitehorse, Cr Kirsten Langford, who also shared her experience about having a loved one with dementia.
Eastern Health Consumer Representative Peter Michel, spoke about how partnering with the family can lead to better outcomes.
“Communication with families is essential. Families know the person behind the dementia and can help us understand what matters to them.”
Some key messages from the event include:
- See the person, not the disease – every person’s experience of dementia is different.
- Early recognition and access to support can make a difference.
- Staying active and connected supports wellbeing, independence and quality of life.
- Early Advance Care Planning helps ensure a person’s wishes and preferences are understood.
- People living with dementia, families and carers are not alone – Hospitals, councils, families and community services all have a role to provide support.
