“The Hospital Elder Life Program could reduce delirium by half.”
Eastern Health is proud to launch the Hospital Elder Life Program (HELP) at the Eastern Health Peter James Centre. HELP is an evidence-based initiative designed to prevent delirium and support older patients during their hospital stay.
Delivered by trained volunteers, HELP provides structured practical and emotional support that improves cognition, confidence and independence. It also reduces loneliness and lowers the risk of delirium-related complications. Patients, families and staff benefit from clearer communication, better experiences and greater overall satisfaction.
HELP is led by a multidisciplinary team that includes a geriatrician, Allied Health clinicians, nursing staff and a HELP Coordinator, working closely with volunteers to create a calmer and more connected hospital environment.
The program is made possible through the generosity of the Estate of Marilyn Maloney, through the Eastern Health Foundation, whose wish was to support Patient Excellence at the Peter James Centre.
