“Vaccines have protected Australians for many years, and the flu vaccine remains one of our best tools to keep ourselves and our community safe.”
This year’s World Immunisation Week (24-30 April) theme is “For every generation, vaccines work”.
As the weather gets colder, flu (influenza) spreads more easily in the community. A/Prof Steven Guy, Clinical Director of Infectious Diseases & Infection Prevention and Control, shares a reminder to get vaccinated this season.
A/Prof Steve Guy explains that the flu can be serious for those who are at higher risk.
“When more people in the community are vaccinated, it helps slow the spread of the flu. This protects those who are most vulnerable, including babies, older Australians, and people with weakened immune systems who may not respond as strongly to vaccines.”
For those who are still unsure about getting vaccinated, A/Prof Steve Guy reassures that it is safe to do.
“It’s completely normal to have questions, but the flu vaccine has been used safely for many years and is carefully monitored in Australia. It cannot give you the flu, and most side effects are mild and short-lived.”
Those aged 75 years and older will be able to receive their RSV vaccines starting mid-May.
