To support our community in understanding the latest information regarding MRI scans at Eastern Health, the following Frequently Asked Questions have been answered.
Yes. The MRI at Maroondah Hospital is completely safe for patients and staff. MRI does not use X-rays or ionising radiation, and the scanner itself is operating normally — the issue relates to the clarity of some images, not to safety.
No, but there is an issue with the radiofrequency shielding around the MRI room, which affected a small number of MRI examinations. Where an image is affected, the interference has a characteristic appearance that is clearly visible to our imaging specialists.
Repair of the shielding is a key priority for Eastern Health, and planning for these works is underway.
Every MRI is carefully reviewed by a specialist Radiologist to ensure it is of diagnostic quality. In the rare event your MRI is not, our team will contact you directly and arrange a repeat scan if needed.
You do not need to contact Eastern Health — if you have not heard from us, your scan was of diagnostic quality.
If you have any concerns about an MRI you have had at Eastern Health, we encourage you to speak with your GP or referring doctor, who can go through your report with you.
No. The interference is clearly visible when it occurs, and every examination is reviewed by a specialist Radiologist before it is reported. This is not something that can pass unnoticed.
No. The issue relates to the shielding of the room, not the scanner itself.
The MRI at Maroondah is 10 years old, has been upgraded during its working life, and remains fully supported by its manufacturer.
Under Medicare’s equipment rules, MRI systems that have been upgraded in this way may continue to be used for up to 15 years.
