Eastern Health will soon be home to a state-of-the-art Biplane Angiography Suite, delivering lifesaving imaging technology to support endovascular clot retrieval surgery for stroke patients.

More than 100 generous donors from across the community have raised $3.85 million through the Eastern Health Foundation to help bring this vital service to life. The suite is scheduled to be commissioned at the Box Hill Hospital campus by the end of 2026.

Eastern Health Stroke Neurologist Philip Choi notes the suite will support the new in-house Endovascular Clot Retrieval service and significantly reduce treatment times and improve outcomes for patients experiencing strokes caused by large blood clots.

“Eastern Health Box Hill Hospital already leads the country as having the most efficient stroke team. With this new service, we’ll be able to deliver all hyper-acute stroke treatments at our Box Hill campus, including mechanical thrombectomy. At the moment, we transfer around 60 patients each year to other hospitals for this time-critical procedure.

“Having the capability in-house means more patients will walk out of hospital after experiencing a major stroke, and for those needing rehabilitation, they won’t have to wait days to return to Box Hill for ongoing care,” he said.

In addition to stroke treatment, the Biplane Angiography Suite will enhance the capacity of Eastern Health to perform complex procedures across multiple specialties, including gastroenterology, oncology, cardiology and vascular medicine.

Director Eastern Health Foundation, Veronica Lyons notes the willingness of the donors to invest in better health outcomes for their community.

“These donations weren’t just financial contributions – they were votes of confidence from our community that this technology was essential. What made them particularly crucial was the diversity of our donor base. We had everyone from major philanthropists to families who’d experienced stroke firsthand, local businesses, and community groups holding fundraising events. This broad support demonstrated genuine community need and backing for this project.

“This Biplane Angiography Suite will save lives and prevent disability that would otherwise be permanent,” Ms Lyons said.
