Matthew Casey Director of Corporate Risk, WHS, Emergency Management and Wellbeing at Eastern Health, has spent 27 years honing his expertise across corporate risk management, work health and safety, staff well-being, and emergency management. Reflecting on his career, Matthew credits much of his passion for safety to his father.

“When I was choosing a university course, my dad said, ‘Safety is up and coming, Matthew. It’ll be diverse, exciting, and full of opportunities.’ He was right.”

Matthew’s role is primarily focused on strategy. “We work with senior managers to shape the future of safety at Eastern Health. We analyse trends in injuries and illnesses to prevent harm and ensure our staff are supported.”

His team fosters a safety culture focused on resilience and well-being through a holistic approach to physical and mental health

“It all starts with culture. We aim to embed risk management principles to guide decision-making and ensure we’re prepared for the challenges ahead.”

Additionally, Matthew’s team is working on a business continuity framework to ensure the organisation can continue providing services, even in the face of external disruptions. “Our goal is to make sure we can respond to threats and keep delivering essential services.”

Through his leadership, Matthew has played a key role in advancing health and safety at Eastern Health, ensuring staff and patients are safe and supported, every day.
