When the tissue in Jason’s larynx became cancerous, it was determined that he required a total laryngectomy, a surgical procedure that removes the voice box.
Communication is important for everyone. It helps us connect with family and friends, learn new things, build relationships, and participate fully in everyday life.
For Jason, being able to communicate was especially important. As a salesman, communication was a key part of his work, but it was equally important in helping him connect with his wife and young son.
Following his surgery, and with support from Eastern Health Senior Speech Pathologist Ishani, Jason has been exploring new ways to communicate and maintain his independence.
Ishani believes that communication is fundamental for everyone. “I’m passionate about ensuring my patients have the tools, support, and confidence to communicate their needs, express themselves, and stay connected with the people and activities that matter most, no matter the challenges they face.”
Jason now uses a Heat and Moisture Exchanger (HME) and a voice prosthesis to support his communication, following his laryngectomy. The HME helps condition the air he breathes by warming and humidifying it, while the voice prosthesis allows him to produce speech. Together, they have helped Jason regain his ability to communicate.
“I’m going to teach my son how to read lips. It’s a bit like a game of charades sometimes, but it’s all part of finding new ways to communicate with each other.”
Despite the challenges, he remains focused on the progress he has made and the support of those around him.
“I think you need to be positive and have fun, no point in dwelling on the past, you just need to keep moving forward.”
“Around 80 per cent of communication is non-verbal,” Ishani said. “Even when someone’s voice changes or they can no longer speak in the same way, there are still many ways for them to express themselves, connect with others and be understood.”
Jason has been a driving force in his own recovery, taking an active role in learning his new tool and how to look after himself, once he leaves hospital. By partnering with Jason to make him an active participant in his care, Ishani and the broader medical team have helped shape Jason’s recovery.
Speech Pathology week celebrates the incredible work they do every day.
