You’re invited to be a part of the Eastern Health’s Healing Paws Appeal, running now until 30 June.
The appeal aims to raise funds to expand our Dog Therapy Program—bringing comfort, connection and relief to more patients across our hospitals.
Therapy dogs do more than just lift spirits. Studies show they reduce stress, ease anxiety, lower blood pressure and improve overall well-being. The simple act of petting a dog can transform a patient’s hospital experience.
“The dogs create a healing environment where patients feel supported and at ease during some of their toughest moments” says Dan Goodman, the Nurse Unit Manager. “But right now, many patients are missing out.”

Only a fraction of the 140 oncology patients who visit our wards each day get to experience a visit from one of our therapy dogs. We currently have visits from two dogs, twice a week—nowhere near enough to meet the growing need.
Your support today can change that. We plan to expand this program into oncology, intensive care and palliative care wards, ensuring more patients experience the healing power of these beautiful creatures.
“Whether they are here for chemotherapy, surgery of a critical check-up, these patients deserve every possible source of comfort.”

Tamara, a haematologist at Box Hill Hospital, shares the positive impact therapy dogs can have on patient outcomes: “For patients and families facing long, difficult treatments, these visits provide a vital sense of connection. You can see the difference.”
