Developing our GEAP with Dr Niki Vincent

Eastern Health hosted Victoria’s first Public Sector Gender Equality Commissioner, Dr Niki Vincent. Dr Vincent leads the implementation of the Gender Equality Act 2020 and plays a pivotal role in championing gender equality within public sector organisations and the broader community.
Dr Vincent brings a wealth of experience in gender equality, social justice and organisational leadership. Prior to this role, she served as the Commissioner for Equal Opportunity in South Australia from 2016 to 2020.

During the session with Eastern Health, Dr Vincent provided a timely reminder of obligations under the Gender Equality Act 2020 (Vic), including the requirement to report on progress against our Gender Equality Action Plan (GEAP) every two years.
She shared sector-wide data to benchmark Eastern Health’s performance against broader industry trends, highlighted areas of strength and opportunities for improvement.

Talking to over 60 people online and in the room, Dr Vincent presented global research on gender-specific issues and their impact on women, reinforcing the importance of embedding gender equity in organisational decision-making.
Further, Dr Vincent highlighted the need for improved use of Equity Impact Assessments (EIAs) across the health sector.

Reiterating our obligation to incorporate gender quality considerations into the design and review of health programs, services and policies – citing examples from other defined entities that have used EIAs to enhance public service delivery and outcomes.
