The Eastern Health Cancer Rehabilitation Team (CRT) provides a vital, patient centred service for people living with cancer and beyond. Through a tailored rehabilitation program, the team supports patients to rebuild physical strength, improve mental wellbeing and regain confidence.
“Our oncology rehabilitation program runs over eight weeks and operates twice a week, but every patient’s experience is completely individual,” Nancy, Oncology Rehabilitation Clinical Coordinator says. “No two programs are the same, because every person and every cancer journey is different.”
Patients can be referred to the Cancer Rehabilitation Team before treatment, during active treatment or following surgery and recovery. Common concerns can include fatigue, reduced strength, balance and mental health challenges. The program is designed to respond to their needs in a safe and supportive environment.
“Rehabilitation is such an important part of the cancer journey because it helps improve both physical function and overall mental wellbeing.”
The service runs as part of a multidisciplinary and integrated care model. Nancy meets the patients for the first time, taking a full picture of each patient’s health, including medical history, medications, falls risk, nutrition and mental wellbeing.
“If we identify risks such as malnutrition, mental health concerns, or the need for further support, we can refer patients to the right services early.” Nancy says.
Reflecting on the importance of personalised care, Nancy emphasises the uniqueness of every patient’s experience.
“Working in oncology rehabilitation is a privilege,” she says. “We support people living with and beyond cancer. It’s a truly rewarding role, and I feel very fortunate to be part of such a passionate multidisciplinary team.”
