Crazy Socks 4 Docs (5 June) is a day focused on breaking the stigma around mental health issues faced by doctors and healthcare professionals.
Reesa, now a Postgraduate Year 2 doctor at Eastern Health, feels that the meaning of the day has changed, since becoming a doctor herself.
“I can see firsthand the stress and pressures that you face in a healthcare setting.”
“It’s 100 % normal to struggle. I’ve never come across anyone who has never felt a little bit like they’re behind, stressed or sad. It is completely normal and expected, so don’t feel alone.” Reesa says.
Hospital Medical Officer Year 2, Angelyn, sees socks as the perfect metaphor for mental health.
“You put on your socks in the morning, you don’t always think about them, but they keep you safe and warm throughout the day.” she says.
“I think mental health and wellbeing is similar because it’s always there, but it’s not always seen and initiatives like Crazy Socs 4 Docs is about bringing this conversation to the forefront”
Angelyn stresses that as a new doctor, finding what helps you decompress from the stresses of work, are just as important as the work itself.
“I start with the basics, making sure I’m getting a good night sleep and trying to eat healthy and exercising. Having a very supportive family and friends really helps as well.”
The fun and colourful socks help remind health professionals that just as they care for others, it’s important they seek help when needed.
“It’s to start a conversation, even if you’re not talking about mental health, it’s nice to start a connection with people that you wouldn’t normally speak to.” Reesa said.
Doctors and Healthcare professionals can face a high rate of moral burn-out and injury, so it’s important that conversations around mental health and fatigue are at the forefront and healthcare workers know where they can get help if they need it.
“It can be a big weight off your shoulders to share the load with someone.” Reesa said.
“I would definitely encourage anyone to reach out to someone who they are comfortable with and know that their fellow doctors are here to support them.” Angelyn said.
