Thursday March 19, 2026
Thursday 19 March marks National Close the Gap Day, a day to recognise the resilience, innovation and success of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, despite challenges faced over generations.
On Close the Gap Day, we reaffirm that progress depends not on words alone, but on everyday allyship that is respectful, accountable, and grounded in genuine partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Eastern Health is committed to achieving equality in health status between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non- Indigenous Australians.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people still have higher infant
mortality, morbidity, and a lower life expectancy, caused by barriers to safe and timely healthcare.
We are reminded that achieving health equality requires active change and access to culturally safe care.
In order to effectively address the complex factors that contribute to health inequities for Indigenous communities, ongoing meaningful action must continue to occur.
Eastern Health aims to assist in closing the health gap and ensure equitable healthcare by prioritising culturally appropriate care and involvement in community.
