Deaf people’s rights are human rights.
Each year on 23 September, the world acknowledges International Day of Sign Languages, as part of International Week of Deaf People (21-27 September) recognising the vital role sign languages play in ensuring accessibility, inclusion, communication, and equal participation in society.
In 2026, the Deaf community is also celebrating two significant milestones: 20 years since the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognised the rights of Deaf people, and 75 years of the World Federation of the Deaf. These milestones acknowledge decades of advocacy towards a more accessible and inclusive world.
Through awareness activities and community events, the week encourages everyone to support a world where Deaf people can participate fully and equally in all aspects of life, including access to the healthcare they need.
At Eastern Health, the International Day of Sign Languages provides an opportunity to celebrate our Auslan-speaking community and reinforce our commitment to improved access and equity.
