“Celebrating cultural diversity is vital because it reflects the true reality of the community we serve and the colleagues we’re working with.”

At Eastern Health, our workforce is made up of over 126 nationalities, and each year we provide care to over 22,000 patients with a primary language other than English.

For Cultural Diversity Week (21-29 March), hear from Liping, Associate Nurse Manager at Ward 5.1, also known as the Accelerated Acute Medical Unit (AAMU) at Eastern Health Box Hill.

“More than just recognising our differences, celebrating cultural diversity is about embracing all the unique strengths we each bring.”

At the AAMU alone, there are more than 11 different cultural backgrounds that make up the team.

“When we celebrate diversity, we create a safe environment where everyone feels valued in a high-pressure healthcare setting.

I think that sense of belonging is the foundation of strong teamwork.”

Liping shares how embracing cultural diversity brings positive benefits for staff, and enhances the experiences of patients needing care.

“We are better equipped to understand a patient’s cultural background context and can also help bridge language barrier.”
