This year’s theme, “Connection Changes Outcomes: In BPD, Every Interaction Matters,” highlights the critical role that relationships and human connection play in recovery for people living with BPD.
For many people with the complex mental health condition known as borderline personality disorder (BPD), experiences of stigma, misunderstanding, rejection and invalidation can contribute to shame, distress and social disconnection. Conversely, empathy, safety, consistency and understanding can reduce crisis, strengthen hope and support recovery. The campaign reminds us that seemingly small relational moments, how we listen, the language we use and our willingness to remain present, can have a profound impact on outcomes.
The week provides an opportunity for healthcare workers, people with lived experience, carers, policy makers and the broader community to deepen their understanding of BPD and recognise the vital role that supportive, meaningful relationships and human connection play in a person’s wellbeing, recovery and sense of hope.
Together, we can help create safer, more compassionate environments where recovery is possible.
The headline event for BPD Awareness Week, is a webinar with Swiss child and adolescent psychiatrist, Professor Michael Kaess on Monday 5th October at 6pm AEDT. Bringing together evidence and clinical perspectives to strengthen understanding and support earlier, more effective intervention.
He will be exploring the evidence on the role of self-harm in early intervention for personality disorder.
Professor Kaess will examine self-harm as:
-
A diagnostic indicator
-
A predictor of risk
-
A target for treatment
-
An outcome measure
