With over 30 years of experience in the pathology field, Jo Wiid  has spent the past four years leading the operational and scientific functions of the three laboratory sites of Eastern Health.

“One of the biggest challenges is the rate of change in pathology, but it’s also one of the most rewarding parts of the job.”

Her passion for pathology began early. After completing Year 10 work experience in a laboratory, she instantly felt at home.

“The first day I walked into a lab, I was fascinated. It combined my love of science with the ability to help people”.

That early spark has sustained a lifelong career across laboratory science, healthcare leadership, and service transformation.

In her role as  Program Director of Pathology, Jo oversees a rapidly evolving environment shaped by new technology and testing methods. Her team’s focus is staying ahead of advancements, ensuring staff capability and maintaining high-quality, timely results.

“Pathology is involved in 70% of all healthcare decisions, every cancer diagnosis comes through our labs.”

She recently guided the pathology team through another successful NATA accreditation, an intensive annual process which assesses  quality and compliance. The assessors commended the strong culture of collaboration and openness across the service.

“It was a proud moment to see the team’s professionalism and willingness to engage with feedback. It speaks to the culture we’ve built together.”

Renowned for her strong leadership, collaborative approach and dedication to continuous improvement, Jo continues to shape a pathology service that is forward-thinking, resilient and deeply aligned with the needs of clinicians and patients across Eastern Health.
