Current Programs in the Eastern metropolitan region for families where a parent has a mental illness

About our Group Programs

Eastern Health ‘Families where a Parent has a Mental Illness’ (FaPMI) coordinates group programs and activities for families. Some are run in partnership with other organisations.

The aim of the programs is to give children and young people peer support and age-appropriate information about mental illness. They can meet others who may be in a similar situation and to learn about healthy coping strategies. These programs compliment the support of workers who work with the families.

Parent’s and carers groups provide an opportunity to meet others who are caring for children in families affected by mental illness, share ideas and experiences, and learn new strategies. We coordinate parent’s groups in inpatient hospital settings and as part of our children’s CHAMPS peer support group.

Our Group Programs:

CHAMPS (Children and Mentally ill Parents) is a peer support program for children (8-12 years old) of parents who have a mental health concern. A parent peer group is also offered as part of the CHAMPS program.

The aim of this program is to provide age-appropriate information and peer support through discussion and group activities. CHAMPS is run as after school groups or school holiday programs and includes education, peer support and social activities.
