South Ward, at Peter James Centre, is an acute mental health inpatient unit, for older adults who require specialist hospital inpatient mental health care.
We understand that everyone’s experience of mental ill health and recovery is different, and we aim to work alongside consumers, and their family members and carers to develop individual treatment and recovery plans together. Our treatment is inclusive and non-discriminatory.
We offer multi-disciplinary treatment and support, including access to psychiatrists, doctors, nurses, social workers, psychologists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, physiotherapists and carer peer support workers. During an admission to South Ward members of the multidisciplinary team will work together with the person and family/ carer to develop recovery goals, review treatment and discuss discharge plans.
The most effective pathway to recovery usually involves a combination of medical and allied health support services.
We practice within a recovery framework and work alongside people and their families and carers to identify and achieve goals to enhance quality of life Liaison will occur between your treating GP in the community, family members and our hospital staff.
Our inpatient units are smoke free environments. Cigarettes, alcohol and illicit substances are not permitted anywhere on the ward; they are a health risk and they can delay your recovery. You will be supported with nicotine replacement and access to Drug & Alcohol services to support you if you are suffering from withdrawal.
