To assist those who are simply done with diets, Eastern Health dietitians are running a 2 session workshop in Healesville to help those wanting a longer lasting change to their weight.

The workshop, called Your Body. Your Way, is a non-diet approach to lifestyle change and aims to provide a safe and positive space for people to discuss their journey with food, with an emphasis on building and maintaining a healthy relationship with food.

One aspect of the workshop explores the concepts of diets and why they don’t work long term. Dietitian Stacey Holden said at any time, approximately 15% of Australians aged over 15 years are currently on a diet. Of this group, more females report being on a diet with the most prevalent age group amongst 51-70 years old.

“We explore the history of fad diets and the underlying aspects that set people up to fail. We also help people to understand the physiological needs of the human body in order to run at its best,” Mrs Holden said.

Research shows that while calorie restriction works in the short term for weight loss, many people regain the weight within five years of ceasing the diet. It is also common for people to end up heavier than when they began due to pre-occupation of food, sense of failure and interrupted body signals.

Mrs Holden said dietitians are positioned to lead this type of group as they are not only the experts in nutrition but also have a strong understanding of a variety of people’s journey with losing weight.

“We see many people who are caught in the cycle of dieting” Mrs Holden said. “We want to see people get off the merry-go-around and take back control of their food choices for the better.”

 The workshops will run at Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health on Thursday 9th August and Thursday 16th August, from 6:00 – 7:00pm. $20 per person for both workshops. Please contact Community Health service on 1300 130 381 for more details or to register your place.
