Stroke Week

Tuesday, September 01, 2020

National Stroke Week is the perfect time to recognise the work being done by the stroke team at Box Hill Hospital.

The team have become world leaders in rapidly assessing the suitability of stroke patients for Endovascular Clot Retrieval (ECR). Big strokes are often caused by a clot blocking blood flow to the brain. The sooner the clot is discovered, the better the chance of reducing permanent disability and of course, death.

ECR is the treatment to remove the clot. Patients are administered with clot busting medications and then transferred to one of the State-wide designated ECR centres.

Time is a critical factor when it comes to surviving big strokes, so this rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment has been able to reduce the 'Door-In-Door-Out' time from 2 hours in 2015, to just 45 minutes in 2020.

The achievements of our Box Hill stroke team have been published in the respected journal, Stroke.
