The Eastern Health Office of Research and Ethics is committed to supporting staff engaged in research as well as pursuing research opportunities with professional development opportunities.

Investigators and prospective investigators are encouraged to contact the Office of Research and Ethics about their training and educational needs. The Office of Research and Ethics will then work one on one with the investigators to develop and provide training and education that best suits their needs and the needs of their teams.

Established in 2007, the Eastern Health Clinical School is widely recognised as a medical tertiary teaching partnership between Eastern Health, Monash University and Deakin University. The Clinical School operates along the four functional streams of Medical Student Programs, Research Division, Eastern Clinical Research Unit (ECRU) and Turning Point.

All are active in research spanning educational research to translational and clinical research to epidemiological research to laboratory-based research.

Medical Student Programs (MSP) is one of the key activity areas within the Eastern Health Clinical School. The principal focus for MSP is the development and implementation of educational programs for medical student placements, Years 3, 4 and 5 of the MBBS course at Eastern Health for Monash University and Deakin University.

Established in 1995, ECRU is one of the fasted growing, results orientated, clinical trials units in Australia. Dedicated to providing the best and fastest results in clinical trial implementation, the ECRU team of doctors, nurses, dieticians and scientists have the unique ability to draw on integrated campus resources across Eastern Health together with The Alfred Hospital.

At any one time, ECRU may be involved in more than 150 active clinical trials involving more than 1500 patients.

Dedicated to providing the best and fastest results in clinical trial implementation, ECRU has the unique ability to draw on integrated campus resources from:

  • Key medical specialists encompassing the breadth of medical disciplines
  • Experienced and dedicated clinical research staff
  • Well-renowned university academics
  • Large NATA accredited pathology department equipped to carry out all blood and body fluid testing

ECRU Biotech, under the direction of Dr Anthony Dear, is the development arm of ECRU and conducts a number of translational research projects in multiple disciplines. ECRU Biotech’s focus is on the principal of modern translational research programs require a broad range of research activities spanning evaluation of existing agents with potential application to novel clinical scenarios to design, development and testing of novel agents in pre-clinical models of disease.

Current activity

Turning Point conducts practical, applied research leading to policy and service development with a focus on improving and expanding the range and quality of treatment and support services through evidence-based research.

Turning Point research incorporates methods to ensure needs of clients are better understood and anticipated.

Turning Point amalgamated with Eastern Health in October 2009 and is formally affiliated with Monash University.
