Eastern Health is calling for volunteers as a result of recent program expansions. Opportunities are available in a range of areas within the eastern region.

"Volunteering is an exceptionally rewarding experience, particularly in health as every day will offer something different," Helen Stagg, Eastern Health Foundation’s Volunteer Services Manager said.

"From providing comfort for patients in the emergency department, to reading magazines with people in aged care, there is something for everyone."

A recent expansion of the volunteer driver program, alongside the ongoing success of the falls and wellbeing program will provide a significant increase in the need for volunteers at Eastern Health.

"We are seeking volunteer drivers to assist in transporting patients to and from their therapy appointments at Wantirna Health. This program is currently offered to residents in the Yarra Ranges and Box Hill, and provides a huge benefit for people who find transport a barrier to accessing much needed healthcare," Ms Stagg said.

"Volunteers in our falls and wellbeing program also find the experience extremely rewarding, spending time with patients at Peter James Centre in Burwood East. We are currently seeking about 50 people to volunteer for this excellent program."

Opportunities to volunteer in one of Eastern Health’s three emergency departments are also available, with the EDCare program recruitment commencing in April.

"Our EDCare volunteers have the opportunity to be behind the scenes in the fast-paced emergency department. They provide comfort for patients when it is needed most. For patients and families experiencing crisis, a friendly face to provide a blanket, cup of tea or chat is welcomed during what can be a very stressful time."

Eastern Health also has opportunities for people to join one of the auxiliaries involved in volunteering and fundraising for Maroondah, Box Hill and Angliss hospitals.
