Bronwyn Buckland is walking over 780kms from Adelaide to Melbourne in April 2018 to raise funds for cancer services at Box Hill Hospital to say ‘thank you’.
When a close family member was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2015, Bronwyn was understandably shocked.
"My family member was in and out of Ward 4.1 (oncology) at Box Hill Hospital for over six months," she explains. "They were valiant and fought hard to beat it, but being a young person, it was also an emotionally hard time to navigate."
During that time, Bronwyn and her family were grateful for both the medical care received and the wellbeing programs Eastern Health makes available to patients and their loved ones.
"Any cancer battle is a fierce fight, but knowing you also have the added support of programs that assist the patient and their family to better manage their day to day struggles is so reassuring," says Bronwyn.
With her loved one now in remission, Bronwyn would like to fulfil one of her ‘bucket list’ goals of completing an interstate walk as a ‘thank you’ for the care her family received during that difficult time.
"I will walk from Adelaide to Melbourne to raise funds for Box Hill Hospital. I am so grateful that we as a family were given the opportunity of another chance. That’s a gift - one to be shared with other families that are given a cancer diagnosis," she explains.
Bronwyn will walk solo for two weeks, leaving Adelaide on 14 April 2018 and arriving at Box Hill Hospital on 27 April 2018.
All proceeds from Bronwyn’s campaign will be used facilitate wellbeing programs for cancer patients and their families at Box Hill Hospital.
