A Christmas message from Nurse Janine

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you’ve already done during the pandemic. It’s been a tough year for all of us.

My name is Janine, and I’ve been a nurse with Eastern Health’s Wantirna Health site for the last 13 years. I usually work night shifts in the aged care ward.

On 22 July, our ward changed overnight. We went from being an aged care ward to a COVID ward within 24 hours.

That first day, six residents with COVID-19 were rushed in from nursing homes. They had been overwhelmed by the outbreak.

It was scary for many of the new residents. Imagine you have dementia. Suddenly, you find yourself in a new place. Everyone you see is wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE) from head to toe. All you can see are eyes through the protective headgear. And you hear only muffled voices through the mask and face shield.

It was a privilege to care for residents through their COVID illness.

Your gift this Christmas will help my team and I to care for each person as we return to being an aged care ward.

Whether it’s a bladder scanner, an electrocardiogram (ECG) heart testing machine or a vital signs monitor – these items are in constant use... and must be sanitised after every patient uses them.

We now need more of each item, to provide the very best care under the new “COVID normal”.

As we adapt to the new COVID normal, your gift will provide vital equipment to keep patients safe and improve quality of life. While it’s not viable to provide high-cost items for each patient, extra units such as a bladder scanner and ECG machine do help to protect patients.

Thank you again for supporting me and my colleagues. Together, you and I can keep patients safe and save lives.

Warm regards,

Nurse Janine
