Help Juliette, Ruby and Scarlett support patients in Intensive Care
My name is Barbara Sorell. I am a Critical Care Nurse. I work in Intensive Care at Maroondah Hospital, part of Eastern Health.
I love my job. It’s a privilege to care for our patients and to support their families.
But it's not an easy job. We care for the most critically ill patients in the hospital.
The first time I met Matt Coburn, he was very sick. He’d been diagnosed with cancer in his oesophagus only four weeks earlier.
Matt was only 42 years old.
His loving wife, Kate, was doing her best to stay positive. They had decided together that they wouldn’t stop fighting.
They were fighting for their three young kids, Juliette, Scarlett and Ruby. The girls wanted their Dad to come home.
Matt was the most loving and devoted father. As a stay at home parent for the last few years, he took the kids to school, made their lunches and read with them at night. He was well loved in his local community.
But by the time Matt arrived in the Intensive Care Unit at Maroondah Hospital, where I work, his health had deteriorated. He wasn’t eating. He couldn’t talk very much.
The cancer was taking its toll.
After Matt's passing, Juliette, Ruby and Scarlett have big dreams. They know their Dad fought bravely for as long as he could. Now, they want to help other patients in Intensive Care in his honour.
Our three Intensive Care Units at Angliss, Box Hill and Maroondah Hospitals all require urgent life-saving equipment.
With your help, we are able to provide world-class medical care in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
Sadly, accidents, emergencies and life-threatening situations happen. Anyone could be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit. It could be you or someone you love.
Your donation will provide the very best care for all patients who come to Intensive Care.
The full list of equipment needed by our three Intensive Care units costs $304,397.
One of the items on our list is the LUCAS automatic chest compression machine, which is vital for patients who have gone into cardiac arrest. Each machine costs $21,066.
Your gift will help purchase this and other vital life-saving equipment for our most unwell patients.
Thank you very much for your compassion.
