Eastern Health requires two references from consultants who have directly supervised your clinical practice for a minimum of four weeks within the past 12 months.

Yes. However, as BPT does not meet the requirements for a Certificate of Completion if you are unsure, it is highly recommended to complete an additional general year.

No. The rotations you undertake in a BPT1 position satisfy the requirements of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and not the framework.

Should you exit Basic Physician Training prior to completion, an extra year of general training will be necessary.

To ensure you meet the RACP requirements you will need to apply as a BPT 1.

Our specialty medicine terms are distributed across BPT1 and BPT2, and you will be required to complete a total of 12 months in specialty medicine.

Once you are successful in obtaining a position with Eastern Health, there will be an opportunity to rank rotations in order of preference. This will also include your annual leave preferences.

We endeavour to allocate you rotations within your top 10 preferences.

Rotations are held across multiple Eastern Health sites.

Yes. As a Medical Registrar, BPT 2 or 3 regional rotation will be at Latrobe Regional Health Service.

Rotations are available in the following disciplines:

Cardiology, Oncology, Neurology, Renal, Respiratory, General Medicine Registrar, ICU, Palliative Care, Aged Care, Endocrinology, Infectious Diseases, Gastroenterology and Hematology.

Yes. There is an Education Program available to all trainees including specific programs for the written and clinical exam preparation.

Yes. Most commonly research is undertaken as BPT 1 but can be undertaken at any year level.

Depending on the rotation, you may be able to be involved in unit specific reviews.

Each rotation is supported by Registrars as well as by ward Consultants.

An Educational Supervisor is allocated for each trainee for the year. In addition, a Director of Physician Education is available at Box Hill, Maroondah, and Angliss Hospitals.

In addition, the Physician Education team are always available for assistance if required.

BPT2’s are given study leave to attend one of the 2-week prep courses that are held during the year. Trainees are allocated to a study group to provide a supportive and collaborative learning group. There are comprehensive “Hot Topics” sessions that are conducted by Consultants and Advanced Trainees which are supported with multiple choice quizzes on each specialty.

In addition, there are opportunities to sit mock Written exams at both Eastern and Monash Health.

Eastern Health benefits from a strong cohort of national and local Examiners who support trainees with Clinical Exam preparation and professional skill development through our Clinical Exam Preparation Program.

Weekly long‑ and short‑case tutorials are provided, alongside practice exams and specialty‑specific evenings including Cardiology, Neurology, Respiratory and Rheumatology. A Visiting Examiner Day is also conducted at Maroondah and Box Hill Hospitals.
