TRANSCULTURAL SERVICES UNIT

Does the Transcultural Services Unit arrange interpreters?

No, you need to contact the staff caring for you to arrange an interpreter service.

Can we make complaints/comments to Transcultural Services about the quality of health care we received?

Only if the complaint/comments are related to interpreter services and access to culturally appropriate needs. It is best to bring up any issues of concern with staff or the department head directly, in the first instance.

Can we get written information in other languages?

Yes, there is translated information on the Eastern Health website and you can ask staff directly for translated information about your medication, treatment and instruction sheets.
You can also get translated information on various general health issues at: www.healthtranslations.vic.gov.au.

Do I have to pay for interpreter or translation services?

No, all written translations and interpreter services are free of charge to you.

Can my family interpret for me?

It is our responsibility to communicate with you in a language you are most comfortable with. We need to provide you with a professional interpreter to ensure you receive the best possible healthcare, and that you fully understand your diagnosis, medications and any surgery that may be needed. The interpreter service enables you to ask questions openly about your health issues, which may be embarrassing in front of family.
Family members are able to provide us with useful information, such as details about your medication, and may be present when interpreters are used, if you are comfortable with this arrangement.
