| The volunteer kiosk located on the ground floor of Box Hill Hospital celebrated 40 years of service to the hospital community on Wednesday 9 September 2009. |
The first 200 customers received birthday cupcakes to mark the special occasion. Kiosk volunteers, supervisors, patients and staff joined together to celebrate a milestone achievement in service to the hospital’s patients, staff and visitors.
“We are very grateful to our committed kiosk volunteers who contribute their time and efforts to benefit the hospital and our patients,” said Claire Douglas, the hospital’s General Manager.
“Our kiosk volunteers are highly valued team members of Box Hill Hospital who continue the tradition of supporting their hospital in their community – their volunteering and fundraising efforts are inspiring; and their friendliness and warmth encourage staff and patients alike.”
Tea, instant coffee and sandwiches were on the menu when the kiosk first opened in September 1969 and opening hours were restricted to weekdays. Now, the kiosk operates from 9 am-8 pm weekdays, as well as a weekend service. In addition to hot savouries, sandwiches, cakes and espresso coffee, the kiosk now sells flowers, gifts, newspapers and toiletries for the convenience of patients, visitors and staff.
Over this time, the kiosk has raised a remarkable $4,867,820.
In 2009, the kiosk raised $195,315 and is staffed by two paid supervisors and 117 volunteers. The funds raised have helped to purchase extra medical equipment such as vital signs monitoring equipment, electric low beds, wheelchairs and portable IV trolleys.
Box Hill Hospital is supported by more than 600 volunteers, who perform a range of operational and support roles. Annually, they contribute approximately 65,000 volunteer hours to the hospital.
