Organisational Information
The Eastern Health Mental Health Program offers comprehensive mental health and alcohol and drug services to all age groups within the municipalities of Whitehorse, Maroondah, Manningham, Yarra Ranges, Knox and part of Monash.
Programs include crisis assessment and treatment, inpatient services, continuing care, mental health rehabilitation, residential and community acute alcohol and drug withdrawal service. The majority of mental health services are non bed-based and are delivered from over 30 community locations throughout the eastern region
Box Hill Hospital:
25 bed Adult Acute Inpatient Unit
12 bed Adolescent Inpatient Unit
10 bed Drug Withdrawal Unit
15 Bed Community Rehabilitation Units
Maroondah Hospital:
25 bed Adult Acute Inpatient Unit
10 bed Mood Disorder Unit

30 bed Aged Person Acute inpatient Unit
Graduate Nurse Program
The Eastern Health Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program supports graduate Division 1 nurses to gain the necessary clinical experience to progress and advance their career in the field of mental health nursing.
The 2009 Graduate Nurse Program commences February 2nd
Clinical Experience
Each Graduate is offered three rotations of four months duration. One rotation must be in an acute in-patient facility.
All graduates are invited to complete a preference list. Please ensure this is included in your application.
Aims of the graduate nurse program
The Eastern Health Mental Health Graduate nurse program aims to provide graduate nurses with a supportive flexible environment in which they can consolidate knowledge and skills as a beginning registered nurse. They are provided positive and challenging learning experiences in the clinical area, to link theory to clinical practice in real and meaningful ways. The graduate nurse is assisted in the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision making skills, and facilitated in the learning and practice of specialist mental health nursing theory and skills.
Supports for Graduates
All graduate nurses are provided Clinical Supervision. In each clinical area they have an allocated a preceptor, and are supported by Clinical Nurse Educators and Psychiatric Nurse Consultants from the Practice Development Team.

Postgraduate Program
Our graduate year and education program is recognized by a number of leading universities, offering up to 50% of a Graduate Diploma. Graduates are encouraged to progress directly to the second year of our Postgraduate Program and complete tertiary studies:
• Three rotations or a full year in one clinical area
• Choose a participating university
• Complete university subjects with
- Study leave
- Financial support and access to scholarships
- Supportive rostering to attend classes (where necessary)
