These
services provide voluntary and involuntary short-term inpatient
management during an acute phase of mental illness until sufficient
recovery allows the person to be treated effectively in a community-based
setting.
Sometimes people need to be cared for in hospital. Acute inpatient
units provide treatment for people with a serious mental illness
on a short-term basis. Many of these units are located with acute
general hospitals. These services provide short-term, inpatient
treatment and support until people are well enough for effective,
community-based treatment. Prior to being admitted to an inpatient
service, people are assessed by a CAT service member.

These
services operate 24 hours per day. They are responsible for assessing
all persons who are being considered for hospital admission and determining
whether or not a less restrictive setting is more suitable. CAT services
also provide treatment and support for people whose acute mental illness
can be managed in the community as an alternative to hospitalisation.

carers and other organizations in an effort to reintegrate them into
their communities.
Referrals
can be made by anyone or any service in the community via the triage
services located at each site.

The Linwood PARC Program is a new program that was funded by the Department Of Human Services Mental Health Branch as a pilot project in 2004. It is an initiative to expand support and treatment options within mental health services. The service is jointly run by the Eastern Health Adult Mental Health Service (EHAMHS) and ARAFEMI Victoria (a psychiatric disability rehabilitation support service or PDRSS).
The Linwood PARC Program is a 10 bed residential facility with 24 hour staffing based at 5 Hood Street, Mont Albert. The Linwood PARC Program offers 8 overnight placements and 2-day placements. The purpose of the facility is to provide brief (1 – 4 weeks) intensive residential rehabilitation and recovery care. The target group to be served is adults requiring more support following an inpatient admission prior to returning home, or those who are at risk of relapse where participation in the Linwood program could prevent relapse and hospitalisation from occurring. The team provides individualised treatment to consumers, assisting them with the support required to prevent further deterioration of their illness and assist in their recovery. The unit employs a highly collaborative service model, working with other parts of the service system and family and carers to support the consumers in meeting their goals. Staffing consists of: ARAFEMI staff - senior and junior disability support workers, Eastern Health staff- a Registered Psychiatric Nurse, Occupational Therapist, Social Worker, Medical staff; and sessional staff along with administrative support.
