Description of Service

BreastScreen Victoria is part of the national breast cancer screening program, BreastScreen Australia, which was established in 1992. BreastScreen is jointly funded by state and federal governments and there are over 40 screening clinics and 8 assessment centres across Victoria.

Maroondah BreastScreen was established in 1994 and has three other satellite screening sites in the eastern region, at Box Hill, Boronia and Lilydale.

The BreastScreen Victoria Mobile Screening Service (MSS) visits Belgrave, Mansfield, Alexandra, Yarrawonga, Corryong, Tallangatta, Myrtleford and Wangaratta every two years.

These rural areas are part of Maroondah BreastScreen’s extensive catchment area. Maroondah BreastScreen screens approximately 30,000 - 33,000 women per year.

Multidisciplinary team

Maroondah BreastScreen employs a range of skilled health professionals who all play an important role in the screening and assessment process.

They include:

  • Program Manager
  • Data Manager
  • Information Officers
  • Nurse/Counsellors
  • Radiographers
  • Radiologists
  • Pathologists
  • Surgeons
  • Data & Administrative staff

Screening

BreastScreen actively invites women aged 50-69 years to participate in the screening program, although women aged 40-49 and over 70 years are still welcome to attend. Regular two-yearly mammograms are the best way of detecting breast changes early, before they can be felt.

BreastScreen provides a reminder service to women in the target age group who receive a letter every two years advising when their next mammogram is due. Every woman's mammograms are read by two radiologists who compare current and previous films to determine if there are any changes and whether further tests are required.

Assessment

Approximately 5-7 women out of every 100 women screened will be called back for further tests. These women will receive a phone call from a Nurse/Counsellor who will explain the assessment process and provide information and support. The vast majority of women called back for further tests will be given a clear result, however a small percentage of women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and will be referred on for appropriate care and treatment.
