Wantirna Health Palliative Care Inpatient Unit
The Wantirna Health palliative care inpatient unit is a 30 bed specialist palliative care unit. We provide care for patients with life limiting illnesses. People are admitted for various reasons, including symptom control, end of life care, respite, and assessment. The unit is not able to offer long term care. Some patients come to us to die however others are able to return home with support.
Eligibility Criteria
Patients can be admitted for end of life care, symptom management, respite or assessment. Unfortunately we do not offer long term care so patients needing to stay for more than a few weeks who cannot return home may need to consider residential care.

My father does not have cancer, but he has emphysema and keeps getting admitted to hospital. He is very short of breath and not able to do much now. Should he see the palliative care team?
Yes, the palliative care team could discuss goals of care with your father, improve his breathlessness, organise help and support at home, and make plans for his future care that could help avoid being admitted to hospital.

Can my dog visit me in the Unit?Of course! |
Can I bring photos and a quilt from home?Absolutely. |
I want to come into the Unit but I really want my own room. Most of our rooms are single rooms however we do have some double rooms. We cannot guarantee you a single room as these are allocated to patients on the basis of need. |
