Alcohol and violence in the night-time economy
Friday, March 12, 2010
Professor Robin Room will address a public forum on 'Alcohol and violence - relationships, causality and policy'on Friday 19 March.

Professor Robin Room is the Director of the AER Centre for Alcohol Policy Research at Turning Point Alcohol & Drug Centre and Professor at Melbourne University's School of Population Health. He will address the public forum together with a range of international speakers at VicHealth (seminar rooms, ground floor, 15-31 Pelham St, Carlton).

With increasing interest in the role alcohol plays in violence, Professor Room says says it is important to examine the evidence of the role of alcohol in violence and methods to reduce alcohol-related harm and to examine what is being done in other countries.

“Alcohol plays a big role in violence, both on the street and in the home, and there is much knowledge and experience internationally about the role of alcohol in violence and methods to reduce alcohol-related violence – this conference will help shape paths forward in Australia in reducing alcohol-related violence,” said Professor Room.

The AER Centre for Alcohol Policy Research at Turning Point Alcohol & Drug Centre has organised the conference, aimed at bringing together international research on measuring and minimising the role of alcohol in violence, with support from the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation and VicHealth. Nine eminent international researchers will present their work and over 30 researchers have contributed papers.
