Site establishment and construction of the new facility in Cantebury Road, Camberwell began in early November 2006. Partial demolition of the building has taken place and essential services to the site, such as plumbing, power and the like are being established. Concrete footings and ground slabs will be laid in the coming weeks, along with structural steel framing.
While extensive works are being carried out on the Camberwell site, patients and staff have been temporarily relocated to accommodation at Wattlebridge in Elgar Road, Burwood.
Fortnightly site meetings have been established to bring together building contractors, building consultants and staff within Eastern Health so that the project is carefully managed.
The redeveloped Canterbury Road Residential Rehabilitation Service is scheduled to be completed in September 2007.

Canterbury Road Community Care Unit – Camberwell The Canterbury Road Community Care Unit has been operating for over 12 years. It is a 24 hour residential service which provides case management and psychosocial rehabilitation to 10 adults with a serious mental illness and long standing psychosocial disability, who would not otherwise be able to maintain a satisfactory quality of life or mental health in the community. The multidisciplinary team engages in an active individualised model of rehabilitation, assisting clients to set and then achieve their goals, focusing on both daily living activities and community service access and integration. The unit employs a highly collaborative service model, involving clients in all aspects of their treatment and decision-making. The Canterbury Community Care Unit has commenced a major redevelopment to expand its capacity to provide residential psychosocial rehabilitation services to 20 adults. The Canterbury Road Community Care Unit currently provides services to 10 clients from the Central East part of the catchment. It is based in Camberwell on an excellent sized and positioned block. However, it requires significant upgrade to bring it up to an acceptable community standard. Further to this, the catchment of Eastern Health as a whole requires an additional 21 beds to achieve the State average for CCU beds. Therefore, a redevelopment has been planned to create an integrated 20 bed facility incorporating patient, clinical and administrative services. The new facility will:
- Improve access to CCU beds for the adult population within the Central East. The unit is in an area with good access to services and transport, and will see an increase from 10 to 20 beds
- Be a purpose built and functional unit
- Incorporate improved independent living areas for patients, assisting them in their rehabilitation into the community
