Medicine
operates at each Eastern Health Hospital and is concerned largely
with people who have conditions of the heart, blood and brain
and who have cancer. Increasingly, developments in medicine have
helped us to diagnose and treat conditions early. Research into
disease and disease management is integral to Medicine and the
program is closely associated with the Eastern
Clinical Research Unit.
The
practice of medicine has undergone major changes in the past decade.
Increasing emphasis has been placed on same-day and at-home care
and in-hospital care is reserved for individuals with complex
problems or those who are very ill. At the same time, medical
practice has become more sophisticated and conditions are being
diagnosed earlier.
Over
the past year services have continued to evolve and grow to meet
the needs of patients. Medical Services achieved several key goals
including:
- A service that is flexible, and interacts strongly and freely
with community health providers
- Sophistication in areas of particular need such as cancer
and vascular disease management
- Practice based on strong scientific foundation, guided by
evidence
- Practice supported by appropriate clinical and research programs
